The Miami Wreck exploration project began a major survey of the deep water wrecks in Miami-Dade county in March 2003.  updating the previous survey completed in 1993.  The survey took just shy of five years and hundreds of dives to complete, with the final survey dive on November 10th, 2007. 

 

Hurricanes have a major affect on the status of shipwrecks; even those in deep water.  Should a major hurricane pass near Miami, a complete re-survey of all the wrecks will once again be required.  Should Miami be fortunate to avoid major hurricanes, the next complete survey will begin in 2013. 

 

Meanwhile, the team continues to make pleasure dives on all of the project sites, and remains on standby should any new wrecks be located.  There remains significant wreck exploration potential in Miami-Dade county, but all the un-surveyed sites are in well over 200ft of water--beyond the comfort zone of the current project director.
